Aging in Place…Is it the Right Choice for You?
Data from a 2021 AARP survey shows that 77% of adults wish to age in place for the long term and this number has been consistent for more than a decade. Aging in place is often more cost effective for individuals and families over time* but there are a few important items to consider when it comes to establishing comfort, capability, alternatives and ensuring this is the right choice for you or your loved one…
Assessing one’s independence and the level of independence that is desired
Truly, it is never too early to decide how you want to live out your golden years and the earlier you decide, the better. Many people will enjoy the first few years of their retirement fully independent and then require additional help in the home as years go on. It must be understood that your senior years are a constant state of evolution- your needs change over time and though it can be hard to get used to, this is a normal part of life.
Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) include bathing, dressing, eating, housekeeping etc. and these seemingly simple tasks can become more challenging over time as we age.
What happens if ADLs become more challenging in the future? Do you/does your loved one have friends and family members that live nearby that could provide care if/when needed? Even if family and friends live nearby and can assist with care when needed, life can get busy and it is not always easy to depend on those closest to us.
Home care companies, like ABC Home Healthcare Professionals, exist to provide a designated caregiver(s) to assist with personal care and various household tasks. While it is good to have family and friends you can rely on, leave your care to the professionals and be able to enjoy quality time with your family and friends when they come to visit you!
Safety and practicality
Many individuals have a very strong emotional connection to their home and understandably so- it holds countless memories near and dear to the heart. However, not every home is conducive for aging in place. As physical abilities change, the home may need to be modified to adapt to the homeowner’s needs. First floor bedrooms or spaces that can be turned into first floor bedrooms is ideal. Also, laundry on the main level is a huge bonus.
In addition, home modifications such as grab rails, stair lifts, walk-in showers, handicap ramps, chair rails in long hallways, widening doorways etc. may be needed as time goes on to make the home as safe and practical as possible for an aging individual.
ABC Home Healthcare is a one-stop-shop as our agency not only provides exceptional home care services, but we offer in-home modifications as well. Our licensed nurses and contractors work together to come up with a plan for home modifications that will be most beneficial for the individual. They are the dream team that helps make living safely at home possible!
Overall health and wellness
It is important to evaluate how much medical attention an individual requires- especially if the goal is to age in place. Remaining at home when advanced medical attention is needed requires much coordination and planning.
What medical care is needed and how will this care be handled? Do you/does your loved one require any medical equipment at the home? Skilled nursing agencies, like ABC, can provide nursing care in the home, medication management and can assist in hospice situations (alongside a hospice provider).
At ABC Home Healthcare Professionals, we are more than an agency- we are on your team and are a resource for you and anyone you may know who is considering aging in place. Even if there is something that is needed that we cannot help with, we can provide as much guidance and insight as possible to point you in the right direction of someone or an organization that can assist!
